Do you want to build a home with an official Green Rating?

There is a growing trend for homes to  be listed by real estate agents with their "green" or energy efficiency ratings attached.  As this practice becomes more prevalent, home buyers will have a additional data points to factor into their decision making process.

In the last few years, while home sales in general are way down, green home sales, surprisingly, are up.  Green certifications are becoming a strong selling feature. In addition, some construction lenders offer lower interest loans for green built homes.

Green Built LEED Certification

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design

LEED certifies four levels of environmentally sustainable buildings.  The LEED levels depend on a variety of construction considerations and require increasingly more stringent adherence to the LEEDs criteria:

  • Certified
  • Silver
  • Gold
  • Platinum
These levels of certifications are achieved by accumulating LEEDs points throughout the construction pprocess.

HERS is a United States standard for green building that incorporates the 2006 International Energy Conservation Code.  As the name suggests, it is focused on the ways homes can be built to better economize on their energy usage.

Green Built Energy Star Rating

Energy Star Built Homes

Energy Star homes are minimally 15% more efficient than the homes built to the 2004 International Residential Code (IRC).  They typically include energy-saving products and features that can make them up to 20-30% more efficient than homes built to the 2004 IRC.  An audit by an independt Home Energy Rater is required to have project officially certified as an "Energy Star Home".
